The deadline for organizations to complete filing for appropriations is tonight at midnight, but only 31 requests had been completed as of 4:30 p.m. Monday according to Student Senate Pro Tempore Jackie Smith.
Smith, a sophomore in political science, said the number of applicants was a quarter of what it was last year.
“There are 80 filings, but they are not complete,” Smith said. “No late applications will be accepted.”
Student Body Treasurer Elmo Lamm said the amount of money availible for appropriations is $68,670.
“Last year there was $46,000 available, but this year the student government fee increase took effect,” he said.
Lamm, a sophomore in management, said the increase was $2 per student per year. “We give back 90 percent of the fee increase to appropriations,” he said.
A requirement for groups to recieve appropriations is for the group to turn in its receipts from the last time they recieved appropriations. So far, Lamm said he has only received one quarter of the receipts from last semester.
“Groups are ineligible to recieve money until they turn in their receipts,” he said.
Kelli Rogers, Student Senate president, said she feels appropriations are the biggest way Student Government gives back to students and allows Student Government “to fund events and organizations that are important to students.”
This year, Rogers, a senior in political science, said Student Government can really help out organizations, especially in the rough economic times. However, she said, the longer groups wait to apply, the harder it is.
“We want to help, but if the groups don’t file we can’t help them,” Rogers said. “Appropriations is not new, but there isn’t much continuity in the leadership of organizations from year to year.”
She said she hopes students remember Student Government is there and students pay a fee to Student Government which allows for appropriations to happen.
