The announcement by Tom O’ Brien confirmed what many fans have feared since hearing about the June car wreck in which Irving sustained a collapsed lung and broken leg, among other injuries. The wreck occurred at 4:30 a.m. while Irving was driving to Raleigh from his hometown, Wallace, N.C.
Irving’s replacement will likely be the winner of the ongoing competition between redshirt freshman Terrell Manning and sophomore Dwayne Maddox, the only true freshman to start a game on the defensive side of the football last season. In addition to starting in four games, Maddox also played in four others, recording 32 tackles while logging 308 snaps.
