This week, students find themselves in the season of exams, which is typically one of the most stressful times of a college student’s semester.
To help alleviate some of the scholastic tension, the Center for Student Leadership, Ethics and Public Service is offering pet therapy through Pet-A-Pooch Dec. 9 in the Talley Ballroom from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Compassionate Options for Progressive Eldercare is bringing Pet-A-Pooch an event where animals are brought in for students to pet and play with, to campus,
Mike Gust, a sophomore in education, said he was unable to attend the event last year but was looking forward to the furry break during his studying.
“I didn’t get to go last year but am glad that they are bringing the animals back,” he said. “Bringing animals to campus creates a more natural environment and takes the students’ minds off of studying.”
Gust said Pet-A-Pooch offers several benefits.
“Animals require a lot of attention — especially puppies — and by giving them attention it takes your mind off of things that are going on during the strenuous exam week,” he said.
“It also gives an opportunity to meet people and opens up opportunities to find study partners.”
The animals in pet therapy are used to promote improvement in social, cognitive, emotional, and physical functioning.
“It’s good for people who like dogs, but I found it was just a nice change in environment,” Anna Ragsdale, a sophomore in psychology, said.
Ragsdale said Pet-A-Pooch gave her a moment of relaxation during a stressful week.
“I was really stressed and it gave me a break away from studying. We had food and were able to play with the animals — although, I wish that the dogs could have run around so we could have played fetch with them and stuff,” Ragsdale said.
Jana DeCoster, a sophomore in education, said he didn’t know pet therapy was available.
“I didn’t know what Pet-A-Pooch was or that it was offered, but I think it’s a great idea nonetheless,” he said. “I like dogs and seeing them during exams, which is generally a stressful time, will be a nice change of atmosphere and different company.”
