The NC State men’s golf team suffered a last-place finish this week in the weather-shortened General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The Wolfpack (603, +27) finished in 15th place in the 15-team field, completing its tournament an astounding 42 strokes behind champions Wake Forest (561, -15). The Pack had no golfers shoot better than par, with sophomore Stephen Franken leading the way for the Pack with a two-round score of 146 (+2), tying him for 19th place. The individual champion of the tournament was Wake Forest’s Will Zalatoris (135, -9).
The tournament was originally scheduled to take place over two days, with 72 holes being played. However, due to inclement weather, Sunday’s events were canceled and the tournament was concluded with just Saturday’s two rounds being scored.
The Pack struggled through the opening round, as State finished up the first 18 holes in 13th place, shooting a 300 (+12). Franken had a solid opening round, shooting a 72 (E) and finding himself in a tie for 15th place. Sophomore Harrison Rhoades finished a few strokes back on Franken, posting a 75 (+3) in the opening round.
Senior Jacob McBride followed Rhoades, shooting a 76 (+5) to start his competition. Coming in right behind McBride was sophomore Davis Richards, whose 77 (+5) rounded out the Wolfpack’s opening round score. Freshman Benjamin Shipp’s score of 78 (+6) was thrown out as the team’s worst score.
The second round brought even more misery for the Pack, as State dropped from 13th down to 15th with a score of 303 (+15). Franken again posted the best score for the Pack, shooting a 74 (+2) to solidify a 19th place finish for himself. Rhoades was next for State, finishing in a tie for 54th place with a second round score of 76 (+4).
McBride matched Rhoades 76 (+4) in the second round, finishing just one stroke back of his teammate for the tournament and finishing tied for 60th place. Shipp improved by one stroke in the second round, shooting a 77 (+5) and finding himself in 72nd place. It was Richards’ score that did not count for the Pack in Round Two, as a rough round for him resulted in an 83 (+11). Richards finished the tournament in 79th place.
This was the Wolfpack’s worst showing in a tournament this season, but it will not have to wait long to try and turn that around. State will compete in the Barton College Intercollegiate from Monday to Tuesday.
