The Good Club goes on a nature walk as one of its club bonding activities. The club hosts several events that promote happiness, health and well-being.
For students looking to invest in themselves and others and negate the effects of stress and pressure on themselves, a student-run organization known as The Good Club may be just the thing. The club seeks to promote health in a variety of ways.
“We aim to spread health and wellness on campus and in the surrounding community, in all facets,” said Phian Tran, club founder and a senior studying agricultural business management. “That means being physically healthy but also mentally and emotionally. Some people might categorize ‘good health’ as going to the gym and eating a balanced diet, which is a big part of it, but we want campus to know it’s more than that.”
The club takes a broader approach to health and seeks to promote a less stressful lifestyle for its members.
“Everybody is so positive, everybody just wants to have a good time and get away from school,” Beverly Setzer said, club president and a junior studying mathematics.
The club has a fairly broad purpose, and it does a wide range of things that are intended to appeal to many different people. Membership is a loose term — while the club does charge dues, $15 per year, all events are open to non-members, sometimes with a small fee associated to cover some of the cost. Additionally, there are no standards to determine active membership. The goal of the club is to promote the health and the happiness of each individual member, so it encourages members and prospective members to attend any events that are interesting to them and bring their friends.
“We’re really open and we want to include everybody,” Setzer said.
As part of that inclusivity, the club is actually open to people who aren’t affiliated with NC State, and in fact anybody at all, which is not true of many on-campus organizations.
The Good Club has a slew of exciting events planned for the upcoming weeks. The next is a “Trash Bash” event, scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday, and the tentative location is Lake Raleigh. The club will provide snacks and water to volunteers to fuel several hours of picking up trash to beautify and preserve the natural environment around NC State. On March 29, at 5 p.m. on the Court of North Carolina, the club is organizing a DIY hula-hoop workshop. Participants will wrap their own hula-hoop, and instruction on hula-hooping techniques will be available. The cost is $5 for non-members. Also, The Good Club will be selling succulents at the Earth Fair, which takes place on April 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Brickyard.
Anyone looking to make some friends, spend more time outside, discover a new hobby or just get a break from school may find that The Good Club is exactly what they have been missing. The semester might be more than half way over, but there’s still plenty of time to get involved with another of the many great campus organizations here at NC State.
“Show up to an event, don’t be afraid to come alone, even,” Tran said. “Health is for everyone — The Good Club is for everyone.”
