My name is Jonathan Carter and I’m your new editor-in-chief. I have earned the privilege to carry on the baton of a phenomenal student newspaper at a university that has a reputation for hard work, strength and dedication.
My mission is to give the students of NC State the journalistic content they deserve. This is a lofty goal and I understand that there are many difficulties associated with it. I am committed to opening up our student newspaper to be controlled by you, the students of this university. I serve as your editor, but this journal is yours to write.
Our content is student-oriented and student-driven. Everything we produce is for us all, as students, to enjoy.
Technician has its problems, just like all of us do. But rest assured that the editorial board for the 98th volume of your student newspaper has no other commitment driving their work besides serving and representing the students of our campus. I realize that a student newspaper cannot operate in its highest capacity unless all students are represented, including those who have been traditionally underrepresented by our publication. I intend on working closely with members of those communities who have been traditionally underrepresented. I will also be working with our sister publication, Nubian Message, to give these groups equal access to a platform that exists for the benefit of every student.
With a new year comes new challenges. Prominent among these is the necessary transition our newspaper must make to digital competency. While we will continue to produce a print newspaper biweekly, our online and social media content will be heavily improved, edited and written to serve this generation of news consumers. Be sure to follow our activity on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and our soon-to-be-made Snapchat account.
As a student-run publication, I bear the responsibility of everything published under the Technician brand. If you ever have concerns, comments, questions or anything you’d like to talk about, please email me at technician-editor@ncsu.edu. My commitment to this newspaper and the student body knows virtually no bounds.
Join me in making this newspaper the best it can be; an organization wholly dedicated to the production of factual, accountable student journalism. I’ll be with you every step of the way.
