Student Senate President Mitchell Moravec, a senior studying psychology and paper materials science, appointed Student Senate Committee chairs Monday night, filling the leadership of committees charged with funding student organizations, communicating Senate matters to the student body and handing student concerns about university affairs.
The appointments are as follows:
- Committee on Academics: Zac Lentz, a graduate student studying biological and agricultural engineering
- Committee on Finance: Sean Harrington, a junior studying political science
- Committee on Government Relations and Oversight (GRO): Ryan Dunn, a freshman studying political science
- Committee on Student Relations: Gabrielle Dauntain, a freshman studying political science
- Committee on University Affairs: Alex Obiol, a sophomore studying engineering
- Committee on Appropriations: Molly Mueller, a junior studying political science
- Committee on Tuition and Fees: Christopher Poteat, a graduate student studying chemistry*
- Committee on On-boarding and Leadership Development: Kate Puricz, a sophomore studying fashion and textile management**
Student Senate committees each have their role defined in the Student Body Statutes, which are changed as Senate chooses to add or remove committees and other roles.
Dunn is the chair of the GRO committee, which is charged with reviewing amendments to the Student Body Constitution and Statutes. Changes made by the committee last session include modifying spending limits for student body president and vice president campaigns, as well as adding a weekend to the period during which candidates for student body offices are allowed to campaign. They also had a hand in establishing the Sustainability Department in the executive branch.
“[The constitution and statutes] are constantly updated and revised through each session so that we’re keeping up with the demands of the university,” Dunn said.
Sen. Mueller says she would like to “continue with the work” of previous Appropriations Chair Rachel Nagley, a senior studying industrial engineering. One change the appropriations chair made last session under Nagley was creating an online video and quiz to make the process of student organizations requesting funding from the appropriations committee “more efficient.”
“The biggest role of appropriations is making the fair and unbiased decisions to allow clubs on campus to do everything that they can possible to make NC State a better place,” Mueller said.
University Affairs Committee Chair Obiol said that her committee is charged with initiating changes to various university departments, including University Police, Transportation, University Dining and others.
“The types of legislation that come through University Affairs are the ones that affect students on an administrative level,” Obiol said. “When they complain about Dining or they complain about the bus system, through University Affairs we’re able to implement those changes.”
Committee meetings are likely to begin at the beginning of the fall semester, and Student Senate’s last full meeting will be this Wednesday in Talley Student Union.
