Technician is more than just a newspaper. It’s an institution. And that designation, which we have worked hard to earn, is not something your news staff takes lightly.
The Technician Editorial Board of 1920 couldn’t understand this then, but it laid the groundwork for writers and editors over the next 97 years to build on, establishing Technician as a credible college newspaper grounded in the notion that students deserve credible, accountable reporting.
While they may not have known how far we would come, the original editors of Technician did understand the importance of establishing a student-led publication, independent of university administration.
“The very spirit that to make a student body a mass of live wires is totally lacking unless some outlet and some encouragement to their many ideas is found,” the board wrote in its inaugural editorial.
While the practice of news coverage has changed drastically over the years, our mission has remained the same.
Today, 97 years after Technician’s first report was printed, our news staff never ceases to produce content that is credible, wholesome and holds all students, staff and faculty fully accountable.
The news staff of Technician has been, is and always will be dedicated to this notion of quality, student-produced journalism. We are informally charged by our readers, the students of this university, to hold everyone to the highest level of scrutiny and accountability, and if we fail, we charge you to hold us to those same standards.
And so long as we stand, our news staff will never forget who it is writing for. Thank you for your continued readership, respect and support.
