Four members of the NC State men’s golf team participated in the Georgia Southern Individual Collegiate tournament in Statesboro, Georgia on Monday and Tuesday.
Jake Storey of Georgia Southern won the individual competition with a three-round score of 208 (-8). The Wolfpack’s performance was highlighted by sophomore Harrison Rhoades in his first event as a member of the Pack. Rhoades finished the tournament tied for sixth with a score of 216 (E).
Behind Rhoades for the Pack were freshmen Dwight Cauthen and Christian Salzer. Both Cauthen and Salzer finished tied for 23rd in the tournament, with scores of 227 (+11). The final State golfer was sophomore Nolan Mills. Mills shot a 144 (E) on the first 36 holes, but did not golf his third round on Tuesday.
Rhoades led the way for the Wolfpack on the first day of the tournament, finishing the first two rounds tied for sixth place. He shot a combined score of 143 (-1) on the opening day of play, putting him nine strokes behind Storey for the lead, with one round left to play. Rhoades started with a 73 (+1) in his opening round, before making strides in the right direction with a second round score of 70 (-2).
Mills was just one stroke behind Rhoades on day one, finishing the first two rounds tied for eighth with a score of 144 (E). Mills started out very strong on the first 18 holes, shooting a 70 (-2), but regressed in the second round with a 74 (+2).
Rounding out the Wolfpack’s performance on day one was Cauthen and Salzer. Cauthen finished the first two rounds tied for 17th place with a score of 149 (+5) which was highlighted by a second-round score of 73 (+1). Salzer finished the first 36 holes tied in 27th place, putting up a score of 152 (+8). Salzer did improve his score of 78 (+6) in round one by four strokes, tallying a 74 (+2) in the second round.
In the final round of the tournament, Rhoades regressed slightly, shooting another 73 (+1). The second day of play did not go nearly as well for Cauthen, who dropped six strokes in the round, shooting a 78 (+6) to fall from 17th to 23rd place. Salzer jumped up four spots to 23rd on the final 18 holes, shooting a 75 (+3).
The event was not a big one for State, as most of the team did not participate. The team’s next match will be on Feb. 19, as it will travel to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico to participate in the Puerto Rico Classic.
