By a slim margin of two votes, Molly Mueller, a third-year studying political science and international studies, was elected as student body treasurer on Monday evening. A three-term senator, Mueller had previously served as the chair of the Senate Committee on Appropriations.
“I’m very honored and ready to get started to serve students,” Mueller said. “My first priority is going to be going through all of the old receipts for the most recent appropriations cycle, and just getting the whole office organized and back on track from this recent transition.”
Mueller received 303 of the votes cast, while her opponent, Adam Skrzecz, a third-year studying political science and history, garnered 301. There were a total of 605 voters, however only 604 votes were cast, due to an abstention.
“It was a very close race,” Skrzecz said. “It’s an affirmation to students that participation is very important, it’s crucial.”
Skrzecz, who served as treasury assistant, resigned from his position two hours after the election results were released Monday evening.*
“I wish [Mueller] the best in her future endeavours as treasurer,” Skrzecz said. “I think the results speak for themselves.”
The special election came as a result of former Student Body Treasurer John Taylor Willis’ resignation on Nov. 1. Willis endorsed Mueller on Monday, citing her experience on the appropriations committee.
Mueller, who took the oath of office at 8:46 p.m. Monday, says that campaigning for student body treasurer was much different than her previous senate electoral victories.
“This was the first time I’ve run for the entire student body, so that was different because I obviously wasn’t focusing my campaign on a certain group of students,” Mueller said. “The four days was a lot quicker, so it felt like a lot more pressure to get things in, especially on the first day and the last day.”
