The Government Relations and Oversight (GRO) Committee announced Wednesday that all actions taken at the Sept. 5 preliminary hearing for impeachment charges levied against Student Body Treasurer John Taylor Willis will be voided, due to “a continuous breach of parliamentary procedure.”
The committee has called for a new preliminary hearing to hear the case anew, which must be announced at least 48 hours in advance.
“President Mitchell Moravec and Government Relations and Oversight Committee Chairperson [Ryan] Dunn will work collectively to ensure the process going forward is authentic, informative, and upholds the Student Body Constitution and Statutes,” said a statement sent by Student Senate President Moravec to all members of Student Government.
In an interview with Technician, Moravec elaborated on the nature of the breach of parliamentary procedure, saying that the committee was unable to vote in good faith based on the format of the hearing.
“It seems to point to how the system was set up and the mentality that we can’t talk about conduct issues, that led to rules such as no evidence,“ Moravec said. “It surmised to that they were not able to make an informed decision.”
Technician and members of the public, excluding advisers and visiting senators, were barred from attending during the deliberations and voting of the committee, despite no legal reasoning being given for removal.
