The NC State women’s soccer team defeated Virginia Tech 1-0 on a game-winning goal by junior Maxine Blackwood in the second overtime period Sunday evening to secure the Pack’s fourth-straight win.
Neither the Wolfpack (12-4-1, 5-3-1 ACC) nor the Hokies (7-6-4, 1-5-3 ACC) could get much going on offense throughout the game, as both back lines and goalkeepers played fantastic games keeping things defensive.
In the first half, NC State had just one shot and kept Virginia Tech to just two as the teams set a defensive tone early in the game, showing that any offensive chances were going to be hard to come.
In the second half however, the game opened up more with the teams combining for nine total shots. Junior goalkeeper Sydney Wootten was great once again for the Wolfpack, making four saves and completing the team’s tenth shutout of the season.
NC State finally broke the tie in the second overtime, as Blackwood put home the game winner on Hokies keeper Mandy McGlynn in the 102nd minute of the game. Sophomore Paige Griffiths was credited with the assist after intercepting a long pass and threading a through ball into the box, which Blackwood gathered and shot past McGlynn to propel the Wolfpack to victory.
It was a physical battle between the two teams, as they combined for 26 fouls during the game, a big reason why the game was so tightly contested.
With the win, NC State has 12 total wins and five ACC wins for the first time since 1995. The Wolfpack also has clinched a spot in the ACC Tournament for the second year in a row, the first time they have accomplished that feat since 2003-04.
The Wolfpack closes out the regular season at home against another conference foe in Louisville on Oct. 26.
