NC State’s women’s tennis team turns its attention to a five-day challenge at UNC-Chapel Hill in the USTA/ITA Carolinas Regional Championship after a week’s rest from the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships Main Draw.
After being defeated by duo Ellyse Hamlin and Kaitlyn McCarthy of Duke in California, junior Claudia Wiktorin and sophomore Anna Rogers will be competing along with the rest of the team for another chance at victory.
The team had a strong start this fall, including an impressive three-day invitational at Duke. Sophomore Adriana Reami’s singles victory stands out as the highlight of the third day along with three other Wolfpack victors: Rogers, Wiktorin and junior Bianca Moldovan.
Following the Duke invitational was a successful four-day Gopher Invitational in late September. On the fourth day, junior Amanda Rebol claimed a singles victory against Minnesota.
Last year during the regional championship, the Tar Heels walked away with a victory for the Division I women’s singles through sophomore Sara Daavettila. The Blue Devils dominated the doubles with Hamlin and senior Samantha Harris.
In 2016, Rebol and Rogers were defeated by UNC players during the second round. UNC continued on in the championship to defeat Moldovan and Wiktorin in doubles with returning player junior Chloe Ouellet-Pizer and her teammate in the quarterfinals, while Reami defeated Ouellet-Pizer in the semifinals.
Earlier this fall at the Duke invitational, Reami and Moldovan were defeated by UNC’s Ouellet-Pizer and her partner, Makenna Jones 8-1. From Duke, Hamlin defeated Rogers 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in the singles quarterfinals draw one match.
It will be an intense match to see all three teams compete against one another this fall as the Wolfpack will have to fight its way once again against No. 5 UNC-Chapel Hill and No. 12 Duke in the USTA/ITA Carolinas Regional Championships. Competition will be fierce with returning victors Harris and Hamlin from Duke and Daavettila from UNC.
