The now-closed site of Greek Fiesta located at 3904 Western Boulevard, in between Meineke Car Care Center and Boulevard Animal Hospital. The location is in the process of being converted into a Popeyes, which specializes in fast food fried chicken.
Popeyes, a Louisiana kitchen-based franchise, will be taking the former spot of Greek Fiesta on Western Boulevard.
Popeyes recently placed a sign in front of the old Greek Fiesta location that pronounced “Coming Soon,” while Greek Fiesta disabled their phone number and shut their doors.
Greek Fiesta has been a part of the NC State community since 2001. The Raleigh-based chain offers a variety of Greek and Mediterranean food with emphasis on “traditional spice blends using recipes that have been handed down from one generation to the next for centuries.” Popeyes, a national fast food chain based on Louisiana cuisine, offers Cajun fried chicken, chicken tenders and seafood.
NC State students had mixed responses about the new fast food restaurant replacing a healthier, local option.
“I enjoyed Greek Fiesta while it lasted. It was a healthy option that was fast and affordable, something a college student values,” said Nathan Chen, a second-year studying engineering.
Some students feel the area around NC State is losing the options that were once available, as local chains are being pushed out by larger corporate franchises.
“I was sad when I drove to Greek Fiesta and saw that it was soon to become a Popeyes,” said Shemayah Hart, a first-year studying industrial design. “I am a pescatarian, so I am very limited on what I can eat at Popeyes. I also worry that this new fast food restaurant seems to be adding to the overall trend of the homogenizing options around NC State.”
Other students were excited about the new option opening soon, as this Popeyes location will be the closest and most convenient location in Raleigh for NC State.
“I did not know that there was a Popeyes opening up. I am excited for the new location because it’s close and quick to campus. I love Popeyes and think they bring a new type of chicken to the area,” said Amega Newton, a first-year studying political science.
Some students are looking forward to the opening of Popeyes and hope the chain will include discounts for students and hold spirit nights for NC State students.
“I am looking forward to new fast food chain because it is cheap and affordable,” said McKenzie Kimrey, a first-year in exploratory studies. “I think Popeyes should also host spirit nights and have student discounts to attract business and connect to the overall community.”
The new Popeyes will be located at 3904 Western Blvd and does not have a set opening date.
