The No. 7 NC State women’s golf team struggled in the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Knoxville, Tennessee, Monday and Tuesday, finishing 10th out of 15 teams at the event.
Taking first place was Illinois with a score of 840, edging Kent State by one stroke. The Wolfpack totaled a score of 879 (+27) for the tournament, including a stroke count of 293 on Tuesday.
In its previous tournament to open the season, the Pack earned a first-place finish at the Ocean Course Invitational in Kiawah Island, South Carolina.
Junior Laura Kowohl led the way for the Pack, finishing 19th overall with a total of 214 (+1) through three rounds. She finished as the leading golfer for NC State in the tournament and shot a 1-over-par 72 in the final round.
Senior Cecily Overbey finished in a tie for 40th, shooting 221 (+8) for the tournament. She also shot a team best 70 (-1) in the second round. Junior Naomi Ko finished tied for 43rd with a score of 222 (+9). Redshirt junior Crystal Huang shot a 225 (+12) and finished tied for 56th while junior India Clyburn came in 71st while shooting a 229 (+16).
Freshman Monika Hartl shot a 73 in the third round to finish in 62nd. It was her first collegiate tournament, and she competed as an individual in the event. Her scores did not have an impact on the NC State team score.
The Pack will look to get back on track when it travels to Chapel Hill for the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational at Finley Golf Course. The tournament will take place Oct. 13-15.
