The NFL season is finally under way, let’s take a look at how NC State alumni performed in week one.
Philip Rivers, Quarterback, Los Angeles Chargers
Rivers and the Chargers offense got off to a very rocky start against the Denver Broncos falling behind 24-7 at the end of the third quarter. The Chargers ended up losing the game 24-21 after the game-tying field goal was blocked by the Broncos. Rivers completed 22 of 33 passes for 192 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Rivers’ touchdowns were to wide receivers Keenan Allen and Travis Benjamin and running back Melvin Gordon.
Another close loss is becoming a common theme for Los Angeles. Since the 2016 season, the Chargers are 1-8 in games decided by seven points or less.
Russell Wilson, Quarterback, Seattle Seahawks
Wilson and the Seahawks struggled against the Green Bay Packer defense on Sunday as they finished with only 225 total yards of offense. Wilson was the sole source of offense as he totaled 158 yards through the air and 40 yards on the ground. Seattle couldn’t find the end zone, falling to the Packers, 17-9.
The offensive line continues to be an issue for the Seahawks as well. Wilson was sacked three times for 23 yards and was under pressure all afternoon.
Mike Glennon, Quarterback, Chicago Bears
Glennon and Chicago held their own against the defending NFC champions, but ultimately fell to the Atlanta Falcons, 23-17.
In his debut as the Bears quarterback, Glennon threw for 213 yards, completed 65 percent of his passes, threw one touchdown and had no interceptions. Glennon couldn’t connect early on, but found his groove and pulled Chicago back in the game with a 19-yard touchdown completion to running back Tarik Cohen. He then led the offense inside the five-yard line with a chance to win inside the final minute, only to see the rally killed by a sack on fourth down.
Jacoby Brissett, Quarterback, Indianapolis Colts
Brissett didn’t enter the game for the Colts until the fourth quarter, when the score was already 37-3 in the Rams’ favor. Brissett led the Colts on a touchdown drive capped off by running back Marlon Mack’s touchdown run. Brissett also covered a fumble in the end zone for a safety. In limited action Brissett threw for 51 yards on two completions.
Since the Colts were thrashed, 46-9, by the Rams, and quarterback Scott Tolzien looked shaky in the pocket, throwing for just 128 yards and two interceptions, Brissett might receive extended playing time in quarterback Andrew Luck’s absence.
