Bringing back the magic of the 90’s with top hits, as well as more recent tracks, the Spin Doctors are well-prepared to take the main stage at Packapalooza this Saturday at 8:45 p.m. The band, whose top hits “Two Princes” and “Little Miss Can’t be Wrong” are on any 90’s playlist worth listening to, is still making and performing music. Now, the Spin Doctors has embraced their roots as a bluesy band full of soul. Bassist Mark White has been a part of the group since its start, and continues to live his dream with each and every show the band puts on.
Q: How did the band hear about Packapalooza and what made you want to play for us this year?
Our booking agent let us know about it. We usually get an offer from someone, and we thought it’d be a great idea so we said, “let’s do it.”
Q: What can fans expect to hear at your performance?
We’re going to be playing our hits, and something from our new blues records. We have a new blues record called “If The River Was Whiskey,” so we’ll play the title track from that, and we’ll play a few other tunes, like “Two Princes.” We usually can’t go wrong with that.
Q: What inspired the band’s switch to a more bluesy sound?
Well that’s what we originally started out as, as a blues band. We’d play in bars and those songs we made up actually sounded like real blues songs. The guys who hired us thought we were playing covers.
Q: How have you all prepared for the show?
I’m 55 years old. I don’t really prepare anymore…we’re like veterans. I used to hear stories where people would fast or sleep an extra hour but we just get up and do it.
Q: What’s been the best part overall about pursuing a career in music, and do you have any advice for students looking to do the same?
For me, I got to see the whole country for free … so that was great. That was a beautiful thing. My advice is to just try to have fun. That’s what I did, and it turned out to be a really good thing. I just played music because I loved it, and that’s the only reason why I did it. Even if I wasn’t doing this I’d still be playing music because I love it, I’d just have a day job or something.
Q: Do you have any new music in the works?
We’re talking about it. Our lead singer has a new record coming out.
Q: Is it still exciting, getting up there on stage and doing what you love?
Yeah, we have a good time. I wish I could do it more … I’d do it everyday.
