For the first time in 22 years, NC State has beaten Duke University at Cameron Indoor Stadium* in men’s basketball! While you celebrate this amazing nail-biting win, take a moment to look back at the school’s now second-to-last win against Duke in the long-ago, mysterious time known as the ‘90s.
On Jan. 20, 1995, the Technician ran a story titled “Celebrating students swarm across campus,” two days after the win. The article, which ran on the front page, covered a crowd of students who got a little out of control celebrating the win.
“A student celebration after the basketball team’s 77-60 victory at Duke University included a new element at least one man hopes doesn’t become a tradition.”
The man referenced in the article’s lead was Tom Allen, WRAL-TV’s manager, who was forced to call the police after a large group of celebrating students somehow made it from Hillsborough Street to WRAL’s Western Boulevard station. Apparently, part of the celebration involved several students swimming in the station’s fountain.
In the same issue, the sports section ran a story titled “Devils Blue after Pack smackin’” in big bold letters. The article opened with three words:
“Duke is dead.”
It continued:
“Last night at Cameron Indoor Stadium, 9,314 stunned Dookies witnessed the Blue Devils’ worst home loss in six years, as the Wolfpack ended its 19-game conference road losing streak with a 77-60 thumping.”
Here’s hoping the Wolfpack can carry the momentum from this win with them for the rest of the season or, even better, beat Duke again next year.
*Editor’s Note: This article initially inferred that NC State hadn’t beaten Duke in 22 years. The article has been changed to reflect that NC State hadn’t beat Duke at an away game in 22 years.
