In observation of Pride Month, Student Body President Jackie Gonzalez has announced in a statement a series of commitments her administration is making “aimed at creating a more positive campus climate for our LGBTQ+ community members,” according to the statement.
Among the commitments made by Gonzalez in the statement is a pledge to work toward providing housing for transgender students that is associated with their gender identity. Gonzalez also committed to creating and supporting media “uplifting the voices of LGBTQ+ students.”
J Hallen, diversity outreach director and former president of the GLBT Community Alliance, helped to develop the steps outlined in the statement.
“These actions steps… are just the beginning of a term-long push towards making this campus a more equitable environment for LGBTQ+ students,” Gonzalez said in the statement.
Gonzalez also said her administration would encourage professors to use students’ preferred names and pronouns, and ask that they highlight their willingness to do so in class syllabi.
