Records and seeding clearly do not mean much to the Wolfpack Women, who sent the Virginia Cavaliers packing on Saturday night, 66-59, and advanced to the ACC Tournament semifinals.
“This is a huge win for us, I’m proud of how we played,” coach Kellie Harper said. “Obviously Virginia is a very talented team. So this is a very, very good win for our program.”
Freshman guard Marissa Kastanek put away a three-point shot at the buzzer to put her team up, 27-24, as it headed to the locker room. It was the emotional jump start the Pack was looking for to end the half.
“We knew that that shot really took our momentum when we were going into the second half,” Kastanek said.
Her shot sparked the Wolfpack, which dominated the opening minutes of the second half, pushing the lead to 38-30. Kastanek nailed another three, along with Brittany Strachan, who knocked down another three from behind the arc.
Perhaps one of the most crucial shots of the game came from senior guard Nikitta Gartrell, who drained a three pointer with 1:45 on the clock, putting the Pack up 58-51
“I want to say it was a bad shot, but it wasn’t a good shot. I just felt it and shot it. Thank God it went in,” Gartrell said. “I would rather me take the shot and miss it than a freshman take it and miss it, because I’ve been through that before.”
On Saturday, the Wolfpack will face No. 7 Boston College, which upset Florida State earlier Friday evening. Tip-off for the second semifinal is slated for 3:30 p.m.
