An unidentified person inappropriately used a fire extinguisher Saturday in Tucker Residence Hall, leading to the evacuation of the building.
Bill Stevenson, the university fire marshall, said “What happened was someone came into the dorm grabbed a fire extinguisher sprayed in the hall way and then in two or three rooms.”
Though the fire alarm was set off, Stevenson said there was no actual fire.
“My men got there and found out there was no fire,” Stevenson said. “It was a mischievous and malicious use of a fire extinguisher.”
Eileen Flynn, a freshmen in business administration and a resident of Tucker Hall, said the event was frustrating.
“I was in my friends room Saturday night when the fire alarm went off and the entire building had to evacuate outside into the pouring rain,” Flynn said. “We were told we could go into the FYC building and Owen to avoid the rain.”
Maia Lucking, a freshmen in First Year College and a resident of Tucker hall, said the evacuation took away from the evening.
“I was here Saturday night, but I do not know what happened. I was getting ready, putting my makeup on to go out, and fire alarm sounded,” Lucking said.
Flynn said she and others who reside in Tucker Hall were worried about the sprinklers being set off.
“Everyone outside was freaking out. ‘what if our sprinklers go off and ruin all of our stuff?’ Who would be liable?'” Flynn said.
According Stevenson the sprinklers would not have been activated by the fire extinguisher dust.
“The sprinkler system wasn’t activated. What was affected was the smoke detectors. They got dirty and had to be checked. From my understanding they are OK,” Stevenson said.
Though the event was dangerous, Stevenson said everything turned out to be fine.
“We were lucky, no one was hurt, of course though its [fire extinguisher powder] not the best stuff to breath,” Stevenson said. “We isolated that part of the building that was affected until house cleaning had an opportunity to clean. There was no damage.”
Stevenson said the person who sprayed the extinguisher has not been identified, but they are looking.
“We don’t know who did it yet, it is still under investigation,” Stevenson said. “We are looking into it. The university police are looking into it, and housing is looking into it. We hope to find out who did so we can take appropriate action. They did put everyone in jeopardy. Its pretty serious.”
