Four football players were cited for at least one drug-related offense by the Raleigh Police Department early Saturday morning.
According to police spokesperson Jim Sughrue, redshirt junior defensive tackle Markus Kuhn, senior left tackle Jake Vermiglio, and redshirt junior defensive tackle J.R. Sweezy were charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of using a controlled substance. A 22-year-old woman, Allison Elaine Davis, was also cited for all three of those charges. Sughrue said, redshirt junior tight end George Bryan was charged only with maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of using a controlled substance.
The four arrested students, Sughrue said, are all residents of the apartment where the warrant was executed, but that two others present in the apartment were not charged.
“All four lived there, that is my understanding,” Sughrue said. “There were two other people there who were not charged.”
Police Sergeant R.E. Hoffman stated in the warrant, he was working as an off-duty officer paid by the College Inn Apartments.
“This secondary employment is conducted with the approval of the Raleigh Police Department and in compliance with all policies/directives,” the warrant stated. “I am in full uniform and employed to perform rounds of the property. My primary purpose is to deter criminal activity and address any violations I discover.”
He began the process of executing the warrant after smelling marijuana while patrolling the apartment complex.
“While walking down the hallway of the third floor, I detected the strong odor of marijuana emanating from the doorway of apartment 360 of the College Inn,” the warrant stated. “I knocked on the door and met the tenants to confirm my observations.”
Campus Police Captain Jon Barnwell said his officers were present, but that the RPD was primarily responsible for the charges.
“They called us and we responded and assisted with that to help them and to refer the students to the University,” Barnwell said. “We were just on the periphery as assistants for RPD.”
Hoffman said he found two homemade bongs, a multi-colored glass bong, three clear sandwich bags containing approximately six grams of marijuana and a blunt cigar containing marijuana in the apartment, according to the warrant. The warrant also stated the finding of Bryan’s BlackBerry, which contained images of a marijuana plant in growth.
All four players were expected to play a substantial role next fall, especially Bryan, the Wolfpack’s returning starter at tight end and a 2009 first-team All-ACC selection. Bryan caught 40 passes for 422 yards and six touchdowns last season. Vermiglio started nine games at left tackle a year ago, and Kuhn started three games in 2008 before redshirting in 2009. Sweezy started one game at defensive tackle last season, but was indefinitely suspended from the team in April after being charged with misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor larceny for his role in a conflict with a bus driver in his hometown of Mooresville.
