Whenever a non-ranked team can knock off the No. 6 ranked team, it’s a big deal. Not to mention that, that then-No. 6 team went on to win the National Championship, so in a landslide, the basketball team’s upset of the Duke Blue Devils in Raleigh is the game of the year.
The lowly Wolfpack came into the game with no one giving it a chance to win. However, the players came to play and they upset the Devils 88-74. From the start of the game to the finish, the Pack was in control with a loud and noisy crowd in the RBC Center backing it.
All five starters scored in double figures, including senior forward Dennis Horner, who finished with 20 points. The game was never really close, but junior point guard Javier Gonzalez sealed the deal with 3:52 left when he hit an off-balanced three pointer as the shot clock expired to extend his team’s lead and put the game away for the Pack.
