Coming into Saturday’s Wolfpack Invitational at Carmichael Gym, N.C. State’s men’s club volleyball team had high hopes, with club vice-president and junior in biochemistry Addison Musser going so far as to guarantee a birth in the finals. And the team backed it up, winning the tournament without dropping a single game. “We put all this work on, all this energy and effort into [the tournament], and then being able to come out and win it,” club president and senior in textile engineering Davis Litzenberger said. “It’s one of the greatest experiences ever.” The team was seeded second behind UNC-Wilmington following pool play and received a bye to the semifinals, where it faced the Myrmidons, a local USA Volleyball team that filled in when a club team dropped out of the tournament. “We had a rough start even though we finished first in pool play, but we knew we were going to face some stronger teams in the playoffs,” Musser said. “But we learned a lot as far as communication and team work [in pool play].” The team defeated the Myrmidons in straight sets, 25-21, 25-22, despite struggles by Musser, the butt of some jokes by the opposing team. “I was a little down on myself,” Musser said. “But we’re all close and we can pick each other up if somebody’s having a bad game. We all play really well together.” In the finals, the Pack played the No. 1 seed Seahawks. The Pack came out strong, winning the first game comfortably, 25-15. But the Seahawks fought back in the second, keeping it close down to the wire. “We always seem to win that first game and then get a little bit cocky and drop the second one and have to come back hard in the third,” Litzenberger said. Playing with the support of the crowd on its home court, the team was able to capture the final two points to win its first tournament of the year. “We did what we wanted to do,” club member and senior in biological engineering Will Pluer said. “We got our jobs done. It was a well-run tournament, and we won.” The tournament was not only a statistical success, but it was also effective logistically, with all the clubs collaborating well with N.C. State. “All the teams were really cooperative and did exactly what they were supposed to do,” Litzenberger said. “Usually it’s like trying to herd chickens and getting them on the court to play. But everything went off without a hitch and we won the championship.”
