Last Friday, the State Board of Elections certified which UNC System student identification cards would be eligible to use as voter identification.
After the 2018 midterm election, when the constitutional amendment to require all voters to show voter identification passed, the North Carolina General Assembly voted to allow student identification cards as acceptable forms of ID, if they passed certain criteria.
Some requirements include a university-taken photo used on the ID, confirming Social Security numbers, citizenship status and other identifying information, according to the law. Additionally, IDs must have expiration dates.
According to The News & Observer, all 17 UNC institutions applied for approval but the only schools selected where students and employees can use their university-issued IDs were NC State University, NC Central University, Elizabeth City State University, Appalachian State University and UNC-Asheville.
The rest of the requests from the UNC System schools like UNC-Chapel Hill were rejected, according to The News & Observer. Only a select few of UNC schools had only employee IDs approved for votes, while a handful of community colleges and private universities had student IDs approved to vote.
