The No. 11 NC State women’s tennis team lost the doubles point but rolled in singles matches to beat Notre Dame 5-2 in J.W. Isenhour tennis complex Sunday.
The win puts the Pack (12-3, 4-1) in great position in the ACC with wins against three top-50 opponents (including at No. 14 Virginia) and the only loss against No. 1 UNC. Wins in easier matchups against unranked Clemson and Appalachian State would leave the Wolfpack in even better position as conference play begins to heat up.
The doubles matches were fiercely competitive. Junior Anna Rodgers and freshman Alana Smith won the first doubles match 6-3. However, Notre Dame (8-4, 2-2) took the doubles point by winning the other two matches 7-5 and 7-6.
The close matches seen in doubles would become a theme in the singles matches as well, as Notre Dame fought NC State tooth and nail. Four singles matches went to a third set and the match lasted over four hours as both teams struggled to overcome the other.
While only one Wolfpack player won in straight sets (Smith won 6-3, 6-0), the Pack swept the first four singles matches to secure the win. Rogers lost the first set 6-2 but came back to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-1. Liz Norman also earned a comeback win with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory. Junior Adriana Reami survived a close third set and won 6-1, 1-6, 7-5 to clinch the match. Senior Bianca Mordovan also notched a win for NC State.
After going 2-1 in a three-game homestand against top-50 opponents, the Pack will continue to defend its home turf against Clemson and Appalachian State on March 6. NC State faces Clemson at 2 p.m. and App State at 6 p.m.
