NC State gymnastics held strong against some of the nation’s top teams this Sunday at its final meet of the season before EAGL Championships. NC State placed third against West Virginia, Penn State and Ohio State with a final score of 195.300.

The No. 27 Wolfpack (16-6, 6-1 EAGL) was outscored by No. 28 West Virginia (196.425-195.300) and No. 24 Penn State (195.525-195.300). The Pack did manage to place third though, outcompeting No. 22 Ohio State (195.300-194.925).

With tough competition, the Pack stayed strong and achieved a second-place finish on the bars, 48.725. The team also tied for second on the floor, alongside Penn State, as both teams scored 48.950. The Pack placed third on the beam, 48.875, and finished fourth on the vault, 48.750.

On the vault, the Pack did not place on the podium. Junior Drew Grantham led the Pack with a score of 9.825 to tie for fifth place with West Virginia’s junior Abby Kaufmann and Ohio State’s junior Olivia Aepli.

The Pack just missed the podium on the bars with senior Caitlyn Fillard finishing fourth along with Penn State’s senior Sabrina Garcia with a score of 9.825.

The beam was tough for the Pack on the podium but still managed to have strong scores as sophomore Lauren Kent, freshman Alliah Harrison and sophomore Nicole Webb tied for eighth place with Ohio State’s sophomore Morgan Lowe at 9.825.

The floor saw senior Alexa Phillips, one of two members of the Pack to place on the podium, tie for second place with West Virginia’s senior Jaqui Tun, 9.875. Also on the floor, junior Melissa Brooker scored a career high of 9.800.

Fillard placed second for all-arounders with a score of 39.175, only 0.250 short of West Virginia’s first-place gymnast Tun. Fillard was followed by teammate Kent who placed fourth, 38.950.

The Wolfpack will participate in the EAGL Championship on Saturday in Durham at 2 p.m.
