NC State softball (16-14, 0-6 ACC) will host UNC-Wilmington (20-13) on Wednesday after a winless conference series in Tallahassee against Florida State.
The Wolfpack managed to take a 16-8 record into its first conference series, but from there lost six straight against Virginia Tech and Florida State.
Despite its record, NC State is pitching an ERA of 2.83 overall and is fielding at a decent .963, but its opponents best this average at .970.
Offensively, the Pack is still outscoring opponents on the stat sheet with 113 runs compared to 95 while racking up more hits as well at 171 compared to 157.
The Seahawks on the other hand are having a slightly better season and are 2-1 against CAA conference rivals.
The good news for the Wolfpack is that UNC-W is 1-7 when on the road but the Seahawks have a strong roster when it comes to hitting.
Outfielder Carson Shaner, one of UNC-W’s most formidable hitters, has amassed six homers while posting a .350 batting average and has the ability to bring in runners, tallying 20 RBIs. Catcher and infielder Jada Santiago, another heavy hitter for the Seahawks, is batting at .320 and has 14 RBIs with 31 hits. Santiago can also reach home plate from the bases, coming into this matchup with 14 runs herself on the season.
While it’s not yet known who will pitch for either team, UNC-W has some relatively good pitchers on the roster. Haley Lenderman boasts an ERA of 1.70 with a 7-5 record. Rylee Pate is another talent on the mound with a 2.45 ERA and a 9-5 record.
This would be a much needed victory for the Pack, as the team has found some success against nonconference opponents, but the Pack bats will have to find success at the plate.
The game against UNC-W will be at Dail Softball Stadium on March 27at 6 p.m. with the Wolfpack looking to get back on track against the Seahawks before traveling to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts to take on Boston College in its third conference series of the season.
