The NC State softball team split a pair of games in the College of Charleston Tournament Friday, beating Marist 3-0 before falling 1-0 to Rhode Island.
Freshman Sydney Nester (6-2, 1.72 ERA) tossed a complete-game gem in the win over Marist (3-4), shutting out the Red Foxes while allowing only two hits and striking out a career-high 12 batters. For the Wolfpack (12-8) offense, all three runs of the game came in the sixth inning.
Junior Angie Rizzi (0 for 2, RBI, run) drove in the first run of the inning on a sac bunt, reaching base on a fielder’s choice. Rizzi came around to score on an RBI triple off the bat of senior Natalie Jones (1 for 2, RBI, run). Jones eventually came around to score as well, scoring after a stolen-base attempt from freshman Kelli Wagner.
In the second game of the day against the Rams (3-8), the Pack couldn’t get the bats going at all against Rhode Island pitcher Becca Rogers. NC State mustered just one hit in the game, a leadoff single from sophomore Sam Russ (1 for 1, two BB).
Junior Devin Wallace (5-5, 1.85 ERA) was also great for the Wolfpack in the circle, allowing just one run over six innings. Wallace allowed just two hits and struck out six batters, but gave up an RBI double to Ari Castillo in the fourth inning for the games only run.
NC State will be back in action Saturday in the College of Charleston Tournament, when it will take on Bryant and the host, the College of Charleston.
