The NC State’s women’s basketball team will host its final ACC game of the season against Miami in Reynolds Coliseum Sunday.
The No. 10 Wolfpack (24-4, 11-4 ACC) has had a strong season despite four injuries that have lowered the Pack’s depth out on the court. Although the Pack will be facing the Hurricanes (24-6, 12-3 ACC) after a hard 30-point loss against No. 3 Louisville, younger players have been stepping up for the Pack.
Freshman center Elissa Cunane has been a notable addition to the team this year, and led the team in baskets against Louisville, scoring 17 points. Sophomore guard Kayla Jones has shined with the opportunities that have come her way recently with the four foul shots she knocked down at the end of the UNC-Chapel Hill game that clinched the Pack’s victory. Against Louisville, Jones scored 15 points, her season high.
Throughout the season, the Hurricanes and the Wolfpack have about the same amount of wins and losses making them seem fairly matched up, but the Pack hasn’t been able to defeat the Hurricanes since the 2014-15 season. Since then, Miami has consistently been ranked well and defeated the Pack by 30 points in 2016. In 2017 the Hurricanes won a close 3-point game over NC State.
Last season, the Pack’s graduate guard Kiara Leslie and junior Erika Cassell each scored 11 points while returning scorers from Miami are sophomore Kelsey Marshall and senior Emese Hof who had 14 and 13 points, respectively.
For this upcoming game, the Pack should look to start off quick with baskets utilizing Cunane in the beginning hopes of drawing the defense in, in order to open up the perimeter for junior guard Aislinn Konig and Leslie to get in some uncontested 3-pointers.
The Pack will play its last conference game in Reynolds Coliseum this Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
