The NC State men’s tennis team shook off a close loss to Virginia to win convincingly against the Louisville with a 4-1 victory Sunday.
The Wolfpack (11-6, 2-1 ACC) blitzed past the Cardinals (12-7, 1-4 ACC) in doubles on the backs of strong performances by seniors Ivan Saveljic and Igor Saveljic (6-3) as well as senior Georgiy Malyshev and sophomore Tasas Babelis (6-4). The momentum would carry into the singles matches as NC State, in need of another ACC win after a tough loss to Virginia, dominated from start to finish.
“I’m so excited about where this group is,” head coach Kyle Spencer told NC State athletics. “For rebounding from a tough loss to Virginia and also just playing well in both matches Friday and Sunday. We’re playing very high-level tennis.”
The singles matches featured another two quick wins for the Pack, as Babelis took a 6-2, 6-1 victory and Malyshev followed up with a 6-2, 6-2 win of his own. After a loss by freshman Yannai Barkai, junior Alexis Galarneau iced the match by breaking Christopher Morin-Kougocheff’s serve and winning 6-3, 6-4.
“Good performance by the guys today,” Spencer said. “We’re excited with the way they came out in the doubles points and getting that 1-0 lead, and then almost across the board we had dominating performances.”
The Wolfpack will look to improve to 3-1 in conference play when they take on Wake Forest on Wednesday.
