Last Tuesday, Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane announced that she will not seek re-election for a fifth term, according to a video release.
McFarlane has served in public office for 12 years and has been mayor since 2011. In her time as mayor, McFarlane described her various achievements as mayor in the video such as passing the transit referendum, supporting the Raleigh Arts Commission and creating an affordable housing plan.
In addition, McFarlane discussed her collaboration with NC State to bring start-up companies and entrepreneurs to the Raleigh area.
She said that Raleigh politics needs a “reset” and that she will not be running so that she can focus on other things such as her family and the arts.
“Something else has changed about Raleigh,” McFarlane said in the release. “We used to fight together for the things we cared about. Now it seems like we just fight with each other. The mean politics of Twitter and social media is painful when it’s about you or someone that you love. This social disease has exploded since I ran for public office in 2007.”
