The NC State women’s tennis team lost to Florida State 3-4 but bounced back to win a close match against Winthrop 4-3 on Sunday in J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
This was a very strong outing for the Wolfpack. Coming off of a very close loss against No. 13 Florida State, the team was able to regroup against a strong Winthrop team to split the doubleheader. It was also the last regular season home match played by the senior class.
The first match against FSU started off strong, with the doubles point being won by the Wolfpack. The duo of junior Anna Rogers/freshman Alana Smith won 6-4 and sophomore Liz Norman/senior Bianca Moldovan followed suit with the same score.
The singles matches came down to the wire, as the fate of the match came down to a tiebreak in the third set between Smith and Emmanuele Salas. Salas pulled out the victory and Florida State clinched the 4-3 win. Rogers won 6-2, 7-5, while Moldovan won 6-3, 6-3. Norman and senior Amanda Rebol both lost in straight sets, while junior Adriana Reami fell in three sets.
The second match against Winthrop was a closely fought battle as the two teams went blow-for-blow from the opening games. The match featured three lead changes and three ties, and was not decided until the third set of the final match. Winthrop won the doubles point to put the Wolfpack in an early hole, but victories by Rogers (6-2, 6-1) and Reami (6-3, 6-4) put the Wolfpack on top 2-1.
Winthrop evened the score when Rafaela Santos won against Norman and then took a 3-2 lead on a victory by Alisa Soloveva over Smith. The Pack tied the score at three when Moldovan won 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, then the final match of the contest saw Rebol down Winthrop’s Ellie Burns 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 to secure the match.
The Wolfpack will take on the Duke Blue Devils at Duke on Wednesday before traveling to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech in the regular-season finale.
