On Wednesday, the 98th session of Student Government gathered one last time to honor its seniors and reflect on the accomplishments made throughout the year. At the event, Student Government members celebrate their accomplishments with food and receive awards for their efforts in Student Government.
Carla Salas, a graduate assistant for Student Involvement, stated via email that the $2,500 budget was spent on food, awards, decorations and room rental.
According to the Student Government budget, this event cost about $2,500, entirely from student fees.
Thania Menjivar, a first-year studying sociology and communication, as well as the head of the banquet committee, stated the majority of the money was spent on food.
“We paid a lot for food; it took a big chunk of our budget,” Menjivar said. “But, we knew that was going to happen because we wanted a formal and nice dinner, so it was worth it.”
Menijvar said she began planning the event back in January with her planning committee.
“At this event, different awards are going to be distributed to the seniors, to those in Senate, the executive board, just as a recognition for the different triumphs that they accomplished throughout the entire session,” Menijvar said. “We begin with the welcome, special awards, then we move into dinner, and more awards will take place. After the awards are done, there will be closing remarks and we’ll be good to go.”
According to Menijvar, Jess Ericco, the former student body president, made a poll in March of the all the different awards that could be won by Student Government officers. Every officer in Student Government could vote and nominate people for each award.
