As the school year comes to a close, NC State’s Facilities Division will begin preparing for summer construction projects that will block Dan Allen Drive and Partners Way and restrict parts of the Brickyard.
The Dan Allen Storm Drain Improvement Project will close Dan Allen Drive and Thurman Drive beginning May 12 until mid-June, according to Cameron Smith, senior director of Capital Project Management within facilities, and Charlie Marshall, associate director of construction. However, parking behind the Student Health Center will still be accessible.
The project will involve tunneling under the railroad tracks to install a 60-inch stormwater pipe which will then run down the west side of Dan Allen Drive, Smith said.
Summer programs which will utilize housing on West Campus will see walkways affected, but pedestrian pathways across the 10-14 foot deep trench will be marked, Marshall said.
According to Marshall, parts of the Brickyard will be affected by the construction of the DH Hill Academic Success Center, a renovation of the second and third floors of the bookstacks and addition of an open stairwell to connect those floors with the Ask Us lobby, as well as a steam pipe replacement.
A crane will be in place to work on the renovations to DH Hill and parts of the Brickyard will be fenced off for the steam pipe replacement, Marshall said.
Partners Way on Centennial Campus will be blocked in two sections for construction of Fitts-Woolard Hall and the Plant Sciences Building. The blockages will be between Oval West Deck and Hunt Library and between Partners Way Deck and Main Campus Drive, Marshall said. Partners Way will be accessible by Varsity Drive.
Marshall said Alliance, Partners Way and Oval West Deck decks will still remain open. Oval West Deck will have its entrances closed in phases but at least one will be open throughout the summer, Marshall said.
Half of the front doors to Hunt Library on Partners Way will be closed to install a reuse line, a non-potable water line underground, but the building will remain accessible, Marshall said.
As part of a preparation plan to renovate the Bureau of Mines in August, the building located near the Free Expression Tunnel, Cox Hall will be excavated this summer to address drainage and flooding problems in the area.
Construction of Carmichael Gym will continue over the summer but a building will be in place when students return in the fall, Marshall said.
