Newly elected Student Body President Emma Carter, a third-year studying sociology and international studies, and Student Body Vice President Nicole Teague, a third-year studying business administration, have been working with the 98th Session Student Body Officers to ensure a smooth transition into the 99th Session presidency.
Since being elected, Carter and Teague have had meetings with administrators and former* Student Body President Jess Errico, a fifth-year studying mechanical and aerospace engineering, to prepare for their session in office.
“We’ve had a lot of meetings, just kind of getting to know administrators, meetings with our SBOs so we can get that group chemistry going so far,” Teague said. “It’s pretty much just introduction session so far, getting our cabinet application together so we can send out.”
The transition has been running smoothly, according to Teague, with the help of Errico and Vice President Meredith Spence Beaulieu, a Ph.D. student studying entomology and plant pathology.
“Jess and Meredith have done a great job with leading us on how we need to go about the transition,” Teague said. “We had a meeting with each of them. They’ve been really outstanding at helping us with the transition.”
Carter and Teague discussed early progress on some parts of their platform.
Carter has spoken with Dr. Mike Mullen*, vice chancellor and dean for the Department of Academic and Student Affairs about student housing, especially the first year live-on requirement, which has been a major concern to some students, and her progress so far on it.
“That’s something we talked to Dr. Mullen about [on Friday] and we’re still in the process of, so I don’t have a definite answer of how we’re going to accomplish that.” Carter said. “But we’re working with administrators to review the first year live-on requirement.”
Teague said that she and Carter see educating students on sustainability as a priority.
“Just educating students about what we have to offer in terms of sustainability and collaborating with various organizations on campus,” Teague said. “We have a sustainability department within the executive branch so working with that director as well, and the sustainability office on campus so just using those resources that we have with sustainability.”
In addition, Carter and Teague want to begin working on syllabus reviews to ensure that teachers respect the preferred pronouns of students, mid-semester course evaluations, mental health help for non-traditional students and promoting overall wellness.
Carter and Teague have no comment about the delay of the election results.
Over the summer, Carter will be interning with Emergency Management and Mission Continuity at NC State and will be focusing on emergency planning. Teague is interning with JPMorgan Chase in Columbus, Ohio.
