The NC State baseball team swept Radford with a 6-3 victory on Sunday. The Wolfpack (37-12, 14-10 ACC) held the Highlanders (23-24) to three runs in all three matchups en route to its first sweep in its last six series.
Junior designated hitter Brad Debo got things started in the bottom of the first inning with a two-RBI single. Sophomore catcher Patrick Bailey and junior infielder Will Wilson scored on the play. Redshirt junior infielder Dillon Cooper scored off a sacrifice fly from sophomore outfielder Jonny Butler in the bottom of the second inning to give the Pack a 3-0 advantage.
Sophomore lefty David Harrison got the start for the Wolfpack, pitching for 2.1 innings and giving up two hits and 0 earned runs against 9 batters. Harrison was replaced by freshman righty Baker Nelson.
The Highlanders evened things up with a big top of the fourth inning. David Bryant brought a run in with a single to right field, then a Highlander batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. That was all she wrote for Nelson, as sophomore left-hander Nick Swiney was called in to stop the bleeding. An RBI sacrifice fly by Kyle Butler tied things at 3-3, but Swiney prevented the Highlanders from taking the lead. Swiney went for 2.2 innings, giving up two hits and a run against nine batters.
The Wolfpack retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth with Wilson scoring off a Bailey sacrifice fly. Senior infielder Evan Edwards widened the advantage in the seventh inning, bringing Cooper home with a single. Bailey had one more RBI in him, sending Wilson home in the bottom of the seventh with a single to make it 6-3 NC State.
Neither team could score for the remainder of the game, giving Swiney his fifth win of the year, and NC State its fourth straight victory. The Wolfpack returns to action Tuesday, May 5 against Campbell at Doak Field.
