The NC State track and field team wrapped up competition at the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Florida this past week with four individual members of the Wolfpack and one relay team qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

Junior Cravont Charleston, senior Nell Crosby, redshirt freshman Ian Shanklin, freshman Jamar Davis and the men’s 4×100-meter relay team all punched tickets to NCAAs, which will take place in Austin, Texas June 5-8.

The NCAA East Prelim kicked off Thursday, with six different members of the Pack competing. In the women’s 100-meter dash, senior Gabriele Cunningham finished in ninth place of the first round with a time of 11.38 to qualify for the quarterfinals. Charleston did the same on the men’s side, qualifying for the quarterfinals in the 100m with a 12th-place run of 10.33.

The men’s 10,000-meter run featured Pack junior JP Flavin, who placed 13th with a time of 29:24.16. Flavin was just one spot behind a trip to the next round. In the field, Davis and sophomore Von Douglas competed in the long jump, with Davis placing 13th and Douglas finishing 39th. In the women’s long jump, senior Janel Pate placed 31st.

The Wolfpack was much busier Friday for day two, with nine NC State student-athletes in action. After qualifying for the quarterfinals in the 100m the first day, Cunningham and Charleston returned to the event Friday. Cunningham placed 17th with a time of 11.45, while Charleston booked his trip to NCAAs in the event with a ninth-place finish of 10.22.

Crosby also punched her ticket to NCAAs Friday, placing 11th in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:08.54. Redshirt freshman Julia Zachgo also ran in the steeplechase, finishing 22nd. On the men’s side, junior Gavin Gaynor finished 32nd in the event.

Cunningham also ran in the first round of the women’s 100-meter hurdles Friday, as her fourth-place finish time of 12.99 sent her to the quarterfinals. In the 200-meter dash, freshman McKenzie Long qualified for the quarterfinals with a 20th-place finish.

On the men’s side, the 200m was a busy event for the Pack, with three runners competing. Senior Shannon Patterson placed 37th, Charleston finished 45th and senior Quashawn Cunningham was disqualified after a false start.

In the field, redshirt sophomore Tyson Fortenberry placed 37th in the discus throw with a throw of 165 feet, 3 inches.

The Pack qualified for three more NCAA events on Saturday, kicked off by the men’s 4×100-meter relay team. The squad of redshirt sophomore Junpai Dowdy, Charleston, Patterson and Quashawn Cunningham placed fifth, running the relay in 39.17.

The Wolfpack women’s 4×100-meter team finished just two spots off a trip to NCAAs, as Pate, Long, sophomore Kylia Wright and Gabriele Cunningham ran the event in 44.11.

In the men’s 5,000-meter run, Shanklin finished in fourth place to qualify for NCAAs after running the race in 14:01.32. Redshirt senior Patrick Sheehan and redshirt junior Ben Barrett also competed in the 5,000m, with Sheehan finishing 31st and Barrett coming in 42nd. In the women’s 5,000m, redshirt sophomore Dominique Clairmonte finished 19th.

Gabriele Cunningham and Long both ran in quarterfinals with a chance at a trip to NCAAs Saturday, but both came up just short. Gabriele Cunningham finished 16th in the 100m hurdles, while Long placed 19th in the 200m dash.

In the field, Davis qualified for NCAAs in his second event of the meet. Davis finished 10th in the triple jump with a jump of 51 feet, 5 inches, booking a trip to Austin. In the women’s triple jump, senior Javonne Antoine and sophomore Michelle Cobb both placed in the top 20. In the women’s shot put, redshirt senior Lauren Evans placed 16th, missing a trip to NCAAs by just four spots.

For Davis, Charleston, Shanklin, Crosby and the men’s 4×100-meter relay team, the season will wrap up in the first week of June in Austin, Texas.
