The No. 23 NC State women’s tennis team picked up two wins in its ACC opening matches this weekend with victories over No. 14 Virginia and No. 36 Boston College.
The Wolfpack (10-2, ACC 2-0) earned its first conference win Friday with a 5-2 team score over UVa (9-2, ACC 3-1) thanks to victories in all but the top-seeded singles match that allowed the Pack to overcome an early deficit, having lost the doubles point.
Senior Amanda Rebol (6-2, 6-1) got the Pack its first point of the afternoon, followed by senior Bianca Moldovan (6-3, 6-4) and sophomore Liz Norman (6-4, 7-5), all in straight sets. Junior Adriana Reami (6-4, 0-6, 6-3) and freshman Alana Smith (6-4, 4-6, 7-5) would pick up wins in extended sets. No. 25 junior Anna Rogers (6-4, 7-5) fell to No. 43 ranked Meghan Kelly in straight sets. The win marks the first time NC State has won its opening ACC match in five seasons.
NC State kept its rackets hot, defeating Boston College (9-3, ACC 1-3) on Sunday morning with a team score of 5-2. The No. 10 ranked duo, Rogers and Smith, started the Pack off with a 6-2 win. Despite being the only doubles win Friday, they were not alone Sunday as the Wolfpack won all three of its doubles matches to secure the doubles point.
In singles, the Pack won four of its six matches. Rogers (4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (10-5)) picked up her 10th ranked win of the season in a third set 10-point match tiebreaker. Reami (6-0, 6-2), Moldovan (6-2, 6-1) and Rebol (6-4, 6-2) also collected points for NC State in straight sets. Smith (6-2, 6-2) lost straight sets and Norman (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) would fall in extended sets. With these two wins, it marks the first time in 20 seasons that NC State has won its first two opening ACC matches.
The Wolfpack has now won four matches in a row and will look to continue its streak Wednesday, Feb. 27 against No. 2 UNC-Chapel Hill as the Tar Heels travel to Raleigh. The match is slated for 3 p.m. at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
