After a stormy fall season for NC State golf impacted by Hurricane Florence, senior Laura Kowohl looks to conclude her career by going out on top.

Head coach Page Marsh has nothing but praise for her star senior and expects Kowohl to take the next step in her game as she concludes her collegiate career.

“I think she is on the cusp of realizing and believing in her own greatness,” Marsh said. “All of us have this journey in sports about recognizing how good we can be. I really think she has made such great strides in all of those areas that she is almost impatient with herself, which means she’s ready to be able to show that she can get it done.”

Not only does Kowohl contribute with her scores, but her value as a leader cannot be overstated. Being from Germany, Kowohl has taken her experience from overseas and applied it to her game here in the United States.

“I think that Laura comes from a strong team environment in Germany,” Marsh said. “She plays for one of the top clubs there, St. Leon-Rot, and she brings that to us. She’s an excellent character. She’s fierce.”

Over her four years, Kowohl has developed into one of the Pack’s best golfers, but she has expressed disappointment with how she played in the fall tournaments. The weather due to Hurricane Florence not only affected many North Carolina communities, but it also affected Kowohl’s game.

“I had a good start, but then, unfortunately, the weather was not very good with the hurricane, so that was a setback,” Kowohl said. “I only played in two or three tournaments, and I even missed a round, so it wasn’t that great. I just want to start where I left off at regionals last year and go from there.”

The Pack is looking for consistent, strong performances from Kowohl. This spring, she is relying on confidence with her driver to keep her scores low.

“The strongest [part of my game] is my driver,” Kowohl said. “I’m just really confident that I’m going to make the fairway, so I don’t even worry about it.”

Although Kowohl feels the most comfortable with her driver, she feels that her short game will need to improve for upcoming tournaments.

“One of my weaknesses would be my putting, which I am working on right now,” Kowohl said.  “I just want to be able to hole some more putts and get some more birdies.”

Kowohl is more than willing to put in the work to improve her game, as she has proven over her four years at NC State. Her leadership and work ethic have been invaluable to the program. Approaching her last season, Kowohl hopes to check off the last of her personal goals.

“I just want to get better every day and work on my game,” Kowohl said. “But I also want to win a tournament, because in my career I haven’t won one.”
