For the fourth game in a row, the NC State softball team couldn’t muster up any offense in a loss, getting shut out by Nebraska, 6-0, at Dail Softball Stadium.
In the third game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the Wolfpack (3-5) picked up just two hits, continuing a troubling trend.
The Cornhuskers (6-2) opened the floodgates early, scoring four runs in the second inning to set the tone.
Junior right-hander Devin Wallace struggled for the Wolfpack, allowing a run on a wild pitch, an RBI single, hitting a batter and letting up a double to four batters in a row in the second inning.
Starting her second game in a row, Wallace (1-2, 2.16 ERA) only lasted one and one-third innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits, three walks and one hit batter, punching out three Badgers hitters in the process.
Freshman Sydney Nester entered in relief for Wallace and finished out the game for the Pack, allowing two runs (zero earned) on four hits and two walks, striking out three batters, largely settling the team down after a rocky second inning.
Nebraska tacked two more runs to its total in the fifth inning, with a two-out error by freshman shortstop April Visser leading to a two-run home run by designated player Lindsey Walljasper, making the score 6-0.
Junior right fielder Brigette Nordberg (2-3) picked up the only hits for the Pack, which was held to five or fewer hits for the fourth straight game, all losses. Junior center fielder Angie Rizzi and redshirt sophomore Randi Farricker eached walked once, and Visser walked twice to round out the Pack’s six baserunners.
Once again the Pack got runners on base but failed to drive them in, stranding six runners on base and getting caught stealing once.
NC State has scored just 10 runs in its last six games (2-4), something that is surprising under new offensive-minded new head coach Jennifer Patrick-Swift.
The Wolfpack will return to action on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Dail Softball Stadium against Wisconsin in the final game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
