Three fraternities at NC State are currently on probation for hazing and/or alcohol violations for most of the remaining spring semester.
The Code of Student Conduct is the overarching set of rules that apply to members of the university. It explicitly prohibits things like alcohol possession and/or consumption under the age of 21, illegal drug possession/consumption in general, harassment, infliction of bodily harm, interpersonal violence and theft. The ruleset applies to both members of the university and organizations, such as clubs and fraternities.
Probation acts as an official warning or a preliminary step before more severe sanctions like revocation of an organization’s status or suspension of a student.
The three fraternities under probation are listed below:
Lambda Chi Alpha is under disciplinary probation for a hazing violation through May 15, 2019.
Sigma Phi Epsilonis under disciplinary probation for hazing and alcohol violations through April 5, 2019.
Sigma Chi is under disciplinary probation for an alcohol violation through June 1, 2019.
As of Jan. 8, 2019, NC State has fully suspended two fraternities for student conduct violations.
Sigma Alpha Epsilon saw its recognition revoked by the university as of Oct. 27, 2016 due to multiple alcohol and drug violations. The National Organization may request to re-establish the fraternity in fall 2021.
Theta Chi saw its recognition revoked by the university as of April 25, 2015 due to multiple drug violations. The National Organization may request to re-establish the fraternity in fall 2019.
