The NC State men’s and women’s tennis teams jump back into competition this weekend after both teams swept their matches last weekend.
The women are coming off defeating No. 20 Texas Tech and Campbell at home last Friday, Feb. 1. This weekend, the team will travel to Seattle to compete in the ITA Indoor National Team Championship for the first time in program history.
The Pack was tabbed at No. 10 in the Tennis Channel/USTA College Tennis Top 25 on Wednesday. Junior Anna Rogers was slotted at No. 25 in the Oracle/ITA Division I Rankings on Wednesday as well.
Rogers has continued her successful career for the Wolfpack thus far this season, as her victory against No. 29 McCartney Kessler clinched the match for the team against No. 11 Florida. Along with her singles play, Rogers and freshman Alana Smith have been dominating doubles play, being placed inside the top 10 at No. 9 in the rankings. This is the second-highest doubles ranking in program history.
The duo’s play has been a key contribution to the team’s success, with a 16-1 overall record in doubles and 5-0 against ranked doubles opponents.
The first team the Pack will face is the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs, who are 3-0 on the season and have only lost two courts in those three matches. This is a program that has had success for many years and lots of experience in these events.
The match will begin at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, and the Pack will be competing all weekend with its opponents to be determined.
The men’s team will be in Raleigh at J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on Saturday, competing against South Carolina at 1:00 p.m. and North Carolina A&T at 6:00 p.m. and looking to improve their 5-1 record.
The No. 22 Wolfpack has received fantastic play from junior Alexis Galarneau, picking up two doubles victories last weekend against North Florida and Winthrop. Galarneau also dominated singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Gabriel Quiroz from Winthrop and a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Till Von Winning from North Florida.
The Pack’s only loss this year came to No. 24 Michigan, however that same weekend, they defeated No. 12 Georgia. In the other four matches NC State has played, they have only dropped one court. South Carolina looks to be the Wolfpack’s toughest match between the two over the weekend.
