Campaigning for the 2019 Spring Student Government Election Cycle began on Friday, Feb. 22, less than two weeks from Election Day set on March 5. While candidates have officially started to campaign, there are still many requirements that they must adhere to in order to remain qualified for the race.
All candidates are subject to remain true to the Board of Elections Handbook as well as NC State Policies Rules and Regulations, otherwise non-compliance of rules will result in penalties or disqualification hearings for the candidates, even if they are defeated or have been sworn into office.
Candidates are restricted to use specific university logos, according to the handbook. In addition, they cannot use university supplies, unless it is made available for student purchase or general use.
Students running must follow university policies when it comes to campaign posters, signs and chalking. Signs may be up to 18 inches tall by 24 inches wide and supported by a single wire “H” frame. Candidates can post in any public board and signs are to be placed in appropriate university green space.
Using university or class listservs for campaign purposes is prohibited and it is not allowed inside or within 25 feet of any on-campus residence hall. Additionally, campaigning is not allowed in computer labs, libraries, inside or within 50 feet of a dining facility or Student Government Facilities including the Wolfpack Students Facebook Group.
This year, spending limits for candidates have been decreased by 50 percent for Student Body Officer Positions and 75 percent for Senate positions to make running for a position on Student Government more accessible to all students. Candidates may spend no more than the following in a general election:
- Student Body President and Vice President: $400
- Student Senate President: $260
- Student Body Treasurer: $260
- Student Chief Justice: $260
- Senator: $50
- Other Elective Offices: $210
- Department-level Elective Offices: $70
Candidates also must document the complete cost of the materials used for campaigning and submit finance reports three times during the campaign, the first report is to be submitted on Monday, Feb. 25.
