The Wolfpack men’s swimming and diving team added two more top-15 victories to its resume by defeating No. 2 Texas (174-126) and No. 15 Arizona (215-83) in Austin, Texas over the weekend. The Wolfpack women beat Arizona 213-81, but fell to top-ranked Texas.
NC State was dominant throughout the meet, and frequently found itself atop the podium. The Pack men won nine individual events to Texas’s two and Arizona’s one. It also won both relay events and swept the podium in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle.
While no Wolfpack swimmer won more than a single individual event, junior Coleman Stewart and senior Justin Ress found a way to stand out. They participated in both winning relays and took individual wins of their own. Stewart won the 100-yard backstroke (46.41) and Ress took the 100-yard freestyle (43.54). Sophomore Eric Knowles nearly set a personal-best time in the 1,000-yard freestyle and won with a time of 9:02.54, and freshman Rafal Kusto picked up his first collegiate win in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:28.47).
The women’s team also picked up a win vs Arizona by a score of 213-81, however it was unable to topple top-ranked Texas and lost 168-130. Junior Ky-Lee Perry won two individual events, while freshman Kylee Alons and sophomore Julia Poole won one each. NC State’s women also took the 200-yard medley relay and placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
NC State will travel to UNC-Chapel Hill on Feb. 8, 2019 to participate in the Carolina College Invitational.
