The NC State women’s basketball team took down Texas 84-73 in the first game of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Sharpshooting guards Aislinn Konig and Kai Crutchfield erupted from downtown for eight 3-pointers and 48 points to lead the Wolfpack (6-0) over a Longhorns (3-3) squad that was ranked to begin the season.

After a back-and-forth first quarter, NC State used a strong second quarter to take a seven-point lead into halftime and keep the Longhorns at bay in the second half.

The Wolfpack shot over 69% from the field in the second period, connecting on nine of its 13 shots, knocking down a 3-pointer courtesy of redshirt senior guard Grace Hunter, and hitting 2 of 3 free throws.

Texas hung with NC State out of the gate in the third quarter, and the Wolfpack took an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter.

That’s when the veteran Wolfpack squad hit its stride, as two 3-pointers by the senior Konig and one from junior forward Kayla Jones powered a 12-4 run to open the quarter opened up a 16-point lead it never relinquished.

Konig finished with 25 points on 4-for-6 shooting from deep, and Crutchfield rounded out the Pack’s two double-digit scorers with 23 points on 4-for-10 from beyond the arc and 7-for-8 on the free-throw line.

As a team, the Wolfpack finally broke out of its 3-point shooting slump that has been plaguing it throughout the first month of the season. NC State knocked down 50% of its 3s, hitting 11 of 22 shots for its second highest-scoring game of the season.

Although it shot just 65% from the charity stripe, NC State found itself at the line all night long, shooting 29 free balls and connecting on 19.

The Wolfpack will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. against tournament host Hawaii.
