On Thursday, Oct. 31, in honor of Halloween night, the University Activities Board’s Film Committee hosted a showing of a scary Halloween movie and raffle for students and faculty at 8 p.m. The movie, “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” and activities were originally planned to take place on Stafford Commons but had to be moved to the Witherspoon Cinema due to the severe weather advisory.
Despite the weather and sudden venue change, the event attracted a crowd that filled about three-fourths of the theater. Several audience members came in costume, dressed as clowns and a variety of characters. People at the event came to celebrate Halloween, watch a scary movie and have fun with friends.
“I wanted to hang out with friends, and I wanted to see the movie,” said Madison Lang, a third-year studying industrial systems engineering. Diego Garza Guajardo, a second-year studying human biology and philosophy, and Abigail Leinfelder, a second-year studying history, went to the event together to celebrate Halloween.
“I like to celebrate Halloween, and I haven’t been able to do it properly,” said Leinfelder.
Before the movie, attendees could choose from a variety of snacks in the lobby, such as Coca-Cola drinks, small cups of candy, bags of popcorn and Insomnia cookies. In the theater, there was a raffle which included several different goodie bags and a giant bag of popcorn.
“Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” takes place in the 80s and focuses on a group of six teenagers on Halloween and the days following. The group accidentally disturbs the ghost of a witch in their town and are slowly hunted down by the scary stories she wrote about them that come true. The audience was engaged the entire time, flinching at jump scares and yelling at the main characters. The monsters created by the witch to kill the group each generated their own reactions from the audience, each with an increasing level of fear and terror.
