The NC State men’s soccer team fell to Pittsburgh 2-1 in overtime of the ACC Championship quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon.

Overtime has been a familiar phenomenon for both the fifth-seeded Wolfpack and the fourth-seeded Panthers as this was both team’s fifth overtime contest.

The golden goal came from Pitt’s scoring leader Edward Kizza early in the first half of overtime as he beat redshirt senior Vinnie Durand at his near post following a low cross.

The overtime goal was Kizza’s second of the match as he grabbed Pitt’s opening goal during its dominant first half. The Panthers held the Pack shotless in the opening half but the dominance did not last long as the Pack came out of the break like a completely different team.

Junior midfielder George Asomani grabbed the Pack’s lone goal as the midfielder picked up the ball at the edge of the box and chopped it past one defender before slamming it home from distance in the 54th minute. Asomani has been solid for the Pack alongside junior Jose Morales at the base of midfield but this was Asomani’s first goal of the year.

The Pack would go on to outshoot the Panthers 7-5 in the second half but it could not capitalize on its chance and the match went to overtime where Kizza killed off the Pack’s ACC Championship hopes.

When the Pack next takes the field it will be in the NCAA Tournament and the bracket for which will be announced on Nov. 18. The Wolfpack is all but guaranteed a spot in the tournament and has a good case for hosting in the opening round.
