The NC State club flag football team will be bringing both of its teams, Team Wolf and Team Pack, down to Wilmington this weekend for the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Flag Football Southeast Regional on the campus of UNC-Wilmington.
15 teams from all over the southeast will converge in Wilmington for the two-day tournament. The states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Alabama and Kentucky will all be represented with teams. Broken up into five groups of three teams each, Saturday will consist of pool play, with each team playing the other two teams in their pool once.
The top two teams from each group will play in a single-elimination bracket on Sunday to determine the tournament’s winner. The champion of the tournament will receive free entry to the NIRSA National Championships in January 2020.
Team Wolf got placed into Group C and will play UNC-Greensboro and the United States Marine Corps’ local team, Show Stoppers. Wolf will play at 8 a.m. Saturday against Show Stoppers and at 10:30 a.m. against UNCG.
Team Pack’s group consists of “Matt Damon,” one of East Carolina’s teams, and South Carolina. The Pack will also play at 8 and 10:30 a.m., against Matt Damon and South Carolina, respectively.
If either NC State team qualifies in the top two in its group and is seeded inside the top six of the ten teams that make it, it will play at 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning. However, if either team places in the top two in its group but is seeded seventh through 10th, it will have to play its third game of the day on Saturday, at 4:30 p.m., to advance to the quarterfinals.
The championship match of the tournament will be at 1 p.m. All games will be held at UNCW’s multi-purpose intramural fields.
In Team Wolf’s and Team Pack’s last tournament, the eight-team Battle of the Atlantic on Miller Fields at NC State, Team Wolf fell in the championship game while Team Pack bowed out in the semifinals.
Both teams are coming off wins against UNC-Chapel Hill two weekends ago, with Team Wolf blowing out the Tar Heels 40-14 and Team Pack pulling out a thrilling come-from-behind victory, 19-18.
