In its first tournament of the season, the NC State wrestling team traveled to Charleston, South Carolina, on Nov. 3 to compete in the Battle at The Citadel. The Wolfpack brought 13 wrestlers and had four wrestlers make the podium for a top-three finish. In the team standings, the Wolfpack finished in fifth place out of seven schools with 48.5 points.
The top performer for NC State was redshirt junior Kellen Devlin, who took home first place in the 133-pound division. Devlin faced fellow Wolfpack teammate and redshirt freshman Jarrett Trombley in the championship match, where Devlin defeated Trombley 3-2 in overtime. The win was Devlin’s first career tournament win at NC State.
In the first tournament of his collegiate career, Trombley won three matches to get to the championship, including a pin in the quarterfinals.
Redshirt sophomore A.J. Leitten took home third place at 149 pounds, which included a dominant 16-0 win in the quarterfinals. Freshman Chris Garrison also took home third place for the Wolfpack in the 184-pound division in his first career collegiate tournament.
The Wolfpack will be back in action Saturday at 4 p.m. outside PNC Arena for its annual wrestle-offs prior to the homecoming football game between NC State and Clemson.
